Software development and indeed the entire technology ecosystem has ridden the Moore's Law wave since the 70's. Programming methodologies, business models, release cycles, innovation rates, etc are all heavily dependent on the expectation that computing power will roughly double every 2-3 years. We are fast approaching the end days of transistor shrinkage with semiconductor manufacturers battling to extend FinFET to 7nm processes. In the near future we are almost certainly looking at a complete re-tooling and re-thinking of transistors to go beyond the 5-7nm point and with real physical limits fast approaching, is it even worth it? How does this new era affect OpenStack? What does the future of IaaS, PaaS, etcaaS look like in these dark days? In this talk we will examine some past and current trends towards hardware diversification as well as tangible investments that large scale tech companies are making. Finally, we will posit some scenarios of how OpenStack thrives going forward.
